Maven's /bin folder has to be added to the global variable "PATH" in order to take effect.
Further configuration is not required for Maven in order to compile.
For individual configuration, for example to receive certain 3rd Party libraries from a Maven2 repository other than http://repo1.maven.org/maven2, you have to configure the settings.xml file.
